Is a Löwchen for you?

The Löwchen is a bright energetic breed. Their love of food makes it easy to train them. Their love of food also can be a problem. No longer can you leave that bag of chips on the Bindiecoffie or end table. They do well in agility, obedience and rally if properly trained. Training a Löwchen starts the day the puppy comes into your home. They can learn bad habits as well as good ones. You must willing to dedicate at least a month of 24/7 training time to potty train them. The use of a crate is an absolute must! If you can't be with a puppy for a period of time, they must be in a crate. There are too many dangerous things (electric cords, cleaning solvents, small easy to swallow objects, as well as socks etc.) that can be a real problem for a puppy.

When your puppy receives their second shot(12 weeks) they should be enrolled in a puppy kindergarten class as soon as possible. Then around six months they should join an obedience class. The time invested at this early age is well worth the investment.

Owning a Löwchen requires grooming. If you choose to keep it in the 'Löwchen cut', you must either buy a pair of clippers or find a groomer who can do it for you about once a month. The long coat needs to be brushed thoroughly once a week(15 to 20 minutes). The Löwchen can be kept in a puppy clip(short all over) or in a kennel clip(lion clip, but with a short jacket and a shaved rear). Which ever you choose there is grooming involved with owning a Löwchen.
